National Association of School Nurses for the Deaf

Bios

Virginia Muraoka-Meyer, APRN-BC, FNP, MSN

I have served as the treasurer for NASND for 3 terms. I love the position since I have been able to correspond with all the members both continuing and new. I just wish I knew about every school that is represented in our organization. I have been an RN for 40 years and a family nurse practitioner for 23 years. I came upon the school nurse position at the Central Instituted for the Deaf by accident, just reading the ads to find a job after relocating to St Louis from California. Every day I am so glad I work at this school. I have learned so much which adds to my knowledge base. I love giving tours of our school and being able to inform the community about all the exciting advances happening in the drive to make the world a better place for the deaf and hard of hearing. I am married, which moved me to St Louis in the first place. My husband, Jim is a clarinetist for the St Louis Symphony Orchestra. My daughter, Vanessa is a 2nd year student at the University of California, Davis studying veterinarian medicine. Currently I have not pets. I love quilting, sewing, and READING. Being a board member of NASND is very satisfying.

Jill Kes RN, LSN

My name is Jill Kes. I am the vice-president of NASND. I work at the Minnesota State Academies in Faribault, MN. I supervise the health clinics at both the Minnesota State Academy for the Deaf (MSAD) and the Minnesota State Academy for the Blind (MSAB). We currently have approximately 140 students at MSAD and 55 students at MSAB. I have worked at the Academies for 6 years and have learned a lot about school nursing. My past work experiences included home health care and hospital nursing (med-surg, ICU, and the operating room). I am married and have 3 children: daughter - Jamie (age 24 and recently married), sons – Jeffrey (22) and Jason (20). My husband and I own a bowling center and restaurant which keeps us very busy. I enjoy reading, biking, walking, and spending time with my family.

Deb Robarge, current NASND past president

Deb Robarge RN BSN, has been Director of Nursing at the Indiana School for the Deaf for 10 years. She previously served as an intermittent nurse at ISD and several other school nurse positions. ISD currently has 380 students, preschool through 5th and 6th year seniors. I have been a nurse for 32 years and have worked primarily in public health and school nursing settings. I have been involved with NASND since I began full-time work at ISD, most recently serving as President from 2003 - 2007. I am married to Al and we have 3 great sons. Our youngest son, Drew, is deaf and graduated from ISD in 2003 and Gallaudet in 2007. In my spare time I love to surf the net, email friend, walk, read and chat on the phone with my 2 granddaughters!
